Top 5 Knowledgeable Lessons to Learn From the “Music Industry” (Rohaan’s version)

Taylor Alison Swift or the Music Industry as many prefer to call her, was born on 13th December 1989 in West Reading Pennsylvania in the United States to Andrea Swift (mama swift) and Scott Kingsley Swift (papa swift). She was named after the famous singer James Taylor. From a very early age, Ms. Swift began to portray her passion for music by writing songs and singing them to her family and later at coffee houses and much later at local festivals on the weekends. Taylor was inspired by Shania Twain’s songs and wanted to become a Country singer. After watching a documentary about Faith Hill, Swift became convinced that becoming a country singer was not only her dream but also her destiny. Hence, she persuaded her family to move to Nashville (the songwriting capital of the world) to get signed by a record label and to begin her career as a singer and songwriter, all at the age of 14.

What happened after Taylor moved to Nashville is history to which her 12 Grammy awards stand as the testimony to. The 33-year-old songwriter has not only managed to become the only female solo artist to win the Album of the Year thrice at the Grammys but has also managed to build a net worth of a billion dollars, all on the mainstay of her singing and songwriting. From putting out her first single “Tim McGraw” to becoming the most listened-to artist on Spotify, Ms Swift has proved to us why we all call her a “record-breaker.” The ‘anti-hero’ singer has gone on to become the only artist ever to simultaneously chart the top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs chart with the release of her 10th studio album ‘Midnights” along with debuting the same at no.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the 11th time in her career. Therefore, it becomes critically essential for all of us to not only celebrate her legacy but also to learn life-changing lessons from her along with improvising them in our daily lives.

Here's a list of the top 5 things we all can learn from Taylor Swift’s career:

Think out of the box

Throughout her 17-year-old long career, we’ve witnessed Ms Swift transform from a country girl who’d write songs on her bedroom floor to a pop singer singing her songs in sold-out stadiums. Taylor Swift was always fearless in thinking out of the box and exploring untravelled spectrums and dimensions of art. The Bejewelled singer has achieved a spectacular milestone of winning the Album of the Year thrice at the Grammys in three different genres. She switched gears and experimented with pop songs instead of country and later with alternative/indie with her album Folklore. Taylor has constantly evolved as an artist by reinventing herself. Every studio album of hers brought us to experience newer shades of her songwriting and storytelling abilities. She is a constant source of inspiration to us all for inspiring us to think out of the box.

Build a castle out of all the bricks they throw at you

It was 2016 when Taylor Swift was bullied online for a scenario she didn’t even want to be a part of. She also became a victim of sexual harassment in 2013. It was the year when the strongest and the calmest of all minds would’ve collapsed but as always Taylor Swift didn't. Even after the public hate she received (which was certain to have ended her career), she turned the tables by releasing her 6th studio album “Reputation”. The first single of the album “Look What You Made Me Do” had us all feeling energetic and electric.

It was a major turning point in her career. When everyone posts hateful comments on your posts but you still manage to play in sold-out stadiums, even when they say you can’t, it is indeed a Taylor Swift thing. She also went on to file a legal lawsuit against her harasser for the 2013 incident and won the case and one Dollar for which she counter-sued him. She was also named “Person of the Year” for breaking her silence about the unsafe environment women face in the workplace. Indeed, she took all the bricks thrown at her and built a castle that people could only dream of.

Be kind to people because it is a wonderful legacy to leave behind

Let’s be brutally honest, no one embodies kindness like Taylor Swift does. From giving out 55 million Dollars as a gesture of gratitude to her touring company to paying a bonus of 100,000 Dollars to each truck driver associated with the loading and unloading of her Eras Tour equipment to sending away gifts to her fans as part of her “Swiftmas” themed Christmas to stopping her car to pose with a young fan, Ms. Swift has won all her hearts. Taylor Swift is the most humble and kindest of all celebrities to ever exist. Period!

Be Fearless and Speak Now

The You Belong With Me singer not only named her albums “Fearless” and “Speak Now” but has also followed them religiously. Taylor Swift has declared June 19th as the official holiday for all the people working with her. This was the day when slavery was eradicated from its roots. When her masters were sold without her consent to a person who had no intention of appreciating the true value of art but only to gain financial benefits out of it, Swift became vocal about why it was always important for artists to own their work. By re-releasing new recordings of her old masters, she claimed the rights to her own blood, sweat and tears. She is the living proof of a person who lives up to her words. She is indeed the role model every teenager needs. She’s raised generations of songwriters and artists and has taught them to speak up about the issues that concern society and has taught them to take action towards making the world a better place to live.

The sky's the limit

Taylor confessed in her documentary “Miss Americana '' that her 7th studio album “Lover” was probably her last chance as an artist to showcase to the world her songs and stories. Irrespective of the ongoing situation she was faced with she kept working hard tirelessly. With her relentless dedication and hard work towards music Taylor Swift was crowned as the “Artist of the Decade'' at the American Music Awards and became the most awarded artist in the history of AMA along with being crowned as the “Woman of the Decade'' by Billboard. She was also awarded a Grammy award for Best Music Video in 2023 for her song All Too Well (10-minute version). Time and time again Taylor Swift has proved her mettle by fighting against the odds, winning numerous accolades and titles, radiating kindness everywhere she goes and most importantly being fearless and speaking up for the matters she truly believes in. The above stated are some of the many reasons why we call Taylor Swift “The Music Industry.”

From crying over Teardrops on My Guitar to screaming the bridge of Cruel Summer, Taylor Swift has her fair share of raising a generation of heartbroken teenagers who carry a songwriting journal in their backpacks, just in case something inspired them to write a song. She has also set an example for us to become kind individuals who are there for each other by being a quintessential role model to us all. A role model we all look up to and an artist whose songs we all need to scream to in the car. And that’s exactly why we all need her to come to India and put on a massive concert just for her loyal and dedicated Indian Swifties.

I hope it was enchanting for you to make it to the end! Thank you!

Street Art - The Voice of Mumbai's Urbanity

“Art imitates life.”  Art is a mirror showing the beautiful and grotesque face of our world. Through time, all forms of art have been windows into social structures, lifestyles, and beliefs of civilizations. Transformative art has evolved over centuries as the voice of people of their times, inspiring change from a shift in social norms to war revolutions.  ["Humanity" at Sassoon Docks. Photo Credit: Special Arrangement, The Hindu] A tedious train ride in the mornings, the stationary traffic in the evenings, in the gray monotonous life of Mumbai, some days my eyes find the gorgeous colors on mossy walls and railway bridges, across old complexes and abandoned warehouses. The Street Art of Mumbai - present everywhere, unnoticed yet leaving its mark.   From the cultural abundance of the city we inhabit to the push for human rights and protest against climate change, from promoting harmony to lauding the unsung heroes, street art does more than beautify the concrete forest we...

Drizzles and Downpours: An Outsider's Look Into Mumbai's Monsoons

Rivulets of water streaming down green leaves. Tiny paper boats floating around in muddy puddles. The sharp rat-tat-tat of droplets against tin roofs and the scent of sweet jasmine rising through the air.  Back home in Kerala, the monsoons had been a time of celebration. The bright and lush paddy fields, car rides filled with the cheer of raindrop races, and the pleasure in consuming all the kozhikotta and chaaya that my grandmother made.  Board games and splashing puddles colored my monsoon. Yet when I arrived in Mumbai, it all came to a pause. Dancing in the rain turned to rushing for shelter, my puddle splashing transformed into cuffing my jeans and my previously abandoned umbrella found a new purpose.  Mumbai had taken away the joy of my beloved monsoon. Or so I thought.   The monsoons in Mumbai were different. While in Kerala, the cities came to a standstill in the face of storms, the hustle and bustle of Mumbai remained unwavering. A phenomenon I’ve slowly be...

World Sight Day: A New Perspective

Creator: Niruti Stock | Credit: Getty Images We all start our week by lamenting the so-called 'Monday Blues' and stressing about our pending work. Many of us overlook the luxuries we own and curse the life we lead; we never take the time to step into someone else's shoes and live life from their perspective. Life is as appalling as it is enchanting and as unfair as it is beautiful. From time to time, we have all questioned our fate and wondered, “Why me?" At some point in life, we all stumble on a rock, struggle to rise, and conclude that 'nothing good can ever happen in my life.’ But have we ever paused to count all the 'good things' that have already happened to us? The purpose of this blog is not to make you feel guilty but to make you realize that, in many ways, you are in a better position than someone else. At the same time, it highlights a global initiative by WHO and Lions Club International. While the previous blog focused on the 'Leading L...
