The Other Side Of Us..

A picture is worth a thousand words. Or so some people think. But was it really enough for you to just see what every SC member looks like? (We’re referring to our awesome pictures on the doors of the AICUF office). We thought so. And therefore, we present to you the ‘legendary’ people who make up the AICUF Team.

Serah (President- a.k.a. The bawss!) - If you’re ever looking to attend a boring conference, take popcorn Serah and a video camera with you. Sarcasm bows in shame when she’s on a roll! She’ll have you rolling on the floor in no time with her comments and expressions. A word of advice: if she’s angry, send her episodes of ‘Superwoman’ (gift-wrapped) and she’ll probably forgive you.

Amrita(Treasurer)[Right]-“Amrita paise chahiye...” and there we go! The whole office explodes into laughter. When you’re with Amrita it’s hard not to burst into fits of laughter. She always has an interesting experience to share, whether in class or in the AICUF office. She loves planning fun trips but they rarely happen due to “unforeseen circumstances” (except the YES camp which will!).

Sheryl (Secretary)-A million-watt smile will greet you every time you enter the AICUF Office. That 'chini' smile (with all due respect to our Chinese brethren) will disarm you easily, beware. And her 'What! Wait up, people!' look every time she's taking notes during a meeting and every tongue in the room is spewing random ideas simultaneously is honestly EPIC (think of some way to get a sneak-peek into our meetings, and you'll see). Come and meet this quaint personality, you'll be delighted. Because, who is the 'The Lion Of The Jungle'? That's right. Sheru.

Susanne (Editor, The AICUFer) Simply put Suzie is arguably the life of the party. Her child like demeanour, dimpled cheek (only one) and twisted imagination is one of the ways in which we can sum her up. Nothing can bring her down and her never say die attitude is one of the many things we love in her. To put it lightly, there’s never a dull moment when she’s around.

Grace (Editor, Phoenix)[Right] This microbiology student constantly enlightens anyone who will listen about the experiments she’s done in college and which outlet to fill their bottle from. A book fanatic, Grace has always felt like she belongs to an earlier generation, the time of The Beatles, Abba, Eric Clapton and the age of writing letters instead of e-mails. In short, she is a sentimentalist, but a damn jolly one!

Naomi(Cultural Coordinator)[Right] Naomi’s got the moves. I mean obviously, since she’s our cultural coordinator which involves a lot of dancing. She's this bubble of energy with a never ending battery life and she's ever ready to take up activities that she's interested in. Easily excited, Naomi is the entire package deal. She can be loud and hyper but at the end of the day she is a total sweetheart.

Karan(Editor, Jeevan)[Left]-You can always count on Karan to have a silly wisecrack up his sleeve. So either he’ll be laughing at his own jokes or at something that turns out to be an unintentional joke. His susceptibility to boredom causes him to end up irritating the other SC members with Crislin and Susanne being his usual targets. (Ask Crislin how often her nose has been pulled by him.)

Crislin(Human Right Commission Coordinator) - If you ever, EVER manage to make the mistake of saying something even mildly sexist, beware: for Crislin shall pounce upon you with her arsenal of political and moral debates. She is ever excited to make a difference and almost always puts everyone else before her own self. One thing to look out for is those wicked hand actions! (You’ve hit the jackpot if you’ve seen Serah mimicking her!)

Annabelle (Women’s Rights Commission Coordinator) - Ah, Bell (you are simply NOT allowed to call her ghanti). She is amazingly dependable! So while most of us are tossing in bed, cursing the alarm or blessing the snooze button, this lovely lady is up and about attending to stuff. She is the kind that will go that extra mile –in both relationships and duties. Did I mention that she is an artist too? Put this one your list as a ‘Must-Have-Friend’. You can thank us later (yes, we do accept free food as well).

Verita (Prayer Coordinator) - She is AICUF’s officially adopted and much cherished baby. That voice will simply make you go “Awwww!” Warning: Do not be fooled by that soft façade. Turn up late for you choir practice or readings, and you’ll know just what I mean. For some reason, she is nicknamed ‘Chakli’ (Shushh! You did not hear that from us, okay?) We love our darling Chakli, oops! I mean our Verita.

Tanya(Editor, Anamika) - Tanya Tojo. We love her name. Don’t you? She is the perfect picture of an Editor. Close your eyes and visualize an Editor. That’s Tanya! She’s calm and composed (the rest of us hunt for reasons to shriek, squeal and giggle). She has a brilliant taste in music and books, and a great listener. And she has a quirky sense of humour. The complete package, this one.

Rhea(Publicity Coordinator) - "Kitne aadmi they?" Ask Rhea and she'll definitely know the answer. She could go on about old Hindi films for ages and singing old Hindi songs is one of her favourite pass times. Evidence of this can be found in the DDLJ and Madhubala bag she carries(Obsessed much?). Being able to conjure something beautiful from the mundane is one of her many talents(We chose her for publicity for a reason). Her quirky habits include dipping her sandwich in sambhar(Really?).

Street Art - The Voice of Mumbai's Urbanity

“Art imitates life.”  Art is a mirror showing the beautiful and grotesque face of our world. Through time, all forms of art have been windows into social structures, lifestyles, and beliefs of civilizations. Transformative art has evolved over centuries as the voice of people of their times, inspiring change from a shift in social norms to war revolutions.  ["Humanity" at Sassoon Docks. Photo Credit: Special Arrangement, The Hindu] A tedious train ride in the mornings, the stationary traffic in the evenings, in the gray monotonous life of Mumbai, some days my eyes find the gorgeous colors on mossy walls and railway bridges, across old complexes and abandoned warehouses. The Street Art of Mumbai - present everywhere, unnoticed yet leaving its mark.   From the cultural abundance of the city we inhabit to the push for human rights and protest against climate change, from promoting harmony to lauding the unsung heroes, street art does more than beautify the concrete forest we...

Drizzles and Downpours: An Outsider's Look Into Mumbai's Monsoons

Rivulets of water streaming down green leaves. Tiny paper boats floating around in muddy puddles. The sharp rat-tat-tat of droplets against tin roofs and the scent of sweet jasmine rising through the air.  Back home in Kerala, the monsoons had been a time of celebration. The bright and lush paddy fields, car rides filled with the cheer of raindrop races, and the pleasure in consuming all the kozhikotta and chaaya that my grandmother made.  Board games and splashing puddles colored my monsoon. Yet when I arrived in Mumbai, it all came to a pause. Dancing in the rain turned to rushing for shelter, my puddle splashing transformed into cuffing my jeans and my previously abandoned umbrella found a new purpose.  Mumbai had taken away the joy of my beloved monsoon. Or so I thought.   The monsoons in Mumbai were different. While in Kerala, the cities came to a standstill in the face of storms, the hustle and bustle of Mumbai remained unwavering. A phenomenon I’ve slowly be...

World Sight Day: A New Perspective

Creator: Niruti Stock | Credit: Getty Images We all start our week by lamenting the so-called 'Monday Blues' and stressing about our pending work. Many of us overlook the luxuries we own and curse the life we lead; we never take the time to step into someone else's shoes and live life from their perspective. Life is as appalling as it is enchanting and as unfair as it is beautiful. From time to time, we have all questioned our fate and wondered, “Why me?" At some point in life, we all stumble on a rock, struggle to rise, and conclude that 'nothing good can ever happen in my life.’ But have we ever paused to count all the 'good things' that have already happened to us? The purpose of this blog is not to make you feel guilty but to make you realize that, in many ways, you are in a better position than someone else. At the same time, it highlights a global initiative by WHO and Lions Club International. While the previous blog focused on the 'Leading L...
