It’s Time to Turn the Page

And the year comes to a close with the launch of our second issue of Phoenix, celebrating a century of our  AICUF’s existence. With immense pride and gratitude, we celebrate the launch of the second issue of our magazine, which not only commemorates our rich history but also signifies AICUF’s impactful presence. We are also thrilled to announce the simultaneous digital launch of both our first and second issues of Phoenix on our AICUF Instagram page and our blog site.

As we bid farewell to another year of activity, I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude, on behalf of the Editorial Committee, to the members of each and every department within AICUF - Social Outreach, Prayer Committee, Women’s Commission, Cultural Committee, Physical and Digital Creatives teams, Public Relations team and the Filming and Documentation team. Your dedication, tireless efforts, and invaluable contributions have been vital in shaping AICUF’s overwhelming success.

I’ll begin by thanking our beloved Fr. Vivian Almeida SJ. His unwavering support and guidance, as we navigated the challenges and opportunities that came our way this year, has been so immensely helpful. I’d also like to thank the Trinity – Karen, Chris and Uni - for their leadership and everlasting encouragement! Our journey would have been significantly more challenging, had it not been for their constant boosting and guidance. Their influence has been a source of inspiration and comfort to each and every member of AICUF. And of course, I have to thank all our patrons, supporters and readers for your steadfast support that has motivated us to strive for excellence and settle for nothing less. Your engagement with AICUF has fuelled our passion to make as much of an impact on our community and beyond.

The completion of 100 years of AICUF is a remarkable milestone, one that reminds us of the rich legacy we have inherited as well as the one we leave behind. It is a time to celebrate our success and honour our history. Over the decades, we've faced challenges, embraced change, and strengthened ourselves to become a source of empowerment and inspiration for those around us. As I reflect on the past year, I find myself filled with a mess of emotions – happiness at all that all our teams have achieved together and the resounding success that we were all a part of creating - yet also sadness as I bid farewell to many of the people I met. AICUF, for many, is a haven of comfort. It is a place for them to be unapologetically themselves and find reassurance in the knowledge that they will be accepted as they are. It invokes a sense of family and belonging.

As we close the year, let us cherish the memories we've created, look forward to new ones, remember the lessons we've learned, and treasure the bonds we've forged. Let us look ahead with hope, determination, and a renewed sense of purpose. Though the curtains on this year are to be drawn now, our journey continues, fuelled by the spirit of AICUF and all that it stands for. As AICUF’s journey continues, we are filled with anticipation for the future and remain steadfast in our mission to empower communities, elevate voices, and ignite imaginations.

Thank you for being a part of our journey.

Here's to a century of AICUF, and to the countless more that are yet to come.

Here's to another year of growth, innovation, and impact.

See you again next year!

Regards,

AICUF Committee for 23-24

Street Art - The Voice of Mumbai's Urbanity

“Art imitates life.”  Art is a mirror showing the beautiful and grotesque face of our world. Through time, all forms of art have been windows into social structures, lifestyles, and beliefs of civilizations. Transformative art has evolved over centuries as the voice of people of their times, inspiring change from a shift in social norms to war revolutions.  ["Humanity" at Sassoon Docks. Photo Credit: Special Arrangement, The Hindu] A tedious train ride in the mornings, the stationary traffic in the evenings, in the gray monotonous life of Mumbai, some days my eyes find the gorgeous colors on mossy walls and railway bridges, across old complexes and abandoned warehouses. The Street Art of Mumbai - present everywhere, unnoticed yet leaving its mark.   From the cultural abundance of the city we inhabit to the push for human rights and protest against climate change, from promoting harmony to lauding the unsung heroes, street art does more than beautify the concrete forest we...

We Begin…

What does a fresh page smell like? Hope, maybe.  Anxiety too, with a dash of curiosity. Maybe, it smells like manifestation, like something quietly waiting to become real. What’s the weight of a new beginning? Heavier than it looks.  The page isn't blank; it's crinkled by the past.  Legacies. Lessons. Quiet scars. Loud dreams.  It holds the pressure of making a point, of continuing something that mattered, even if no one claps. Of daring to start again. As we step into the unknowns of tomorrow, we pause. To reflect. To remember. To ask: what does this beginning mean to us? New beginnings are overwhelming. There’s just so much I want to do, so many ways to go about chasing these dreams, and it’s like there’s too much inside me all at once. Too many ideas crashing into each other. Then there is the fear, this nagging fear that it’ll all just turn into a mush, like upma.  What if everything goes wrong? What if I try and fall flat? How do I look peo...

The Festival of Lights under a Different Light

Diwali. The festival of lights. Whether intended or not, we all have developed a connection to this festival, something we look forward to. It’s a time where everything is a little brighter, whether it’s the sweets flooding in, family coming together, that childhood album you forgot about that shows up during Diwali cleaning or at least the long-awaited vacation to finally execute all your plans. It’s celebrated across religions like Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Newar Buddhism, though associated with different stories and practices. All in all, however, this festival signifies the victory of the light over darkness; Good over evil; Knowledge over  ignorance.       (Credits: htoindia.com)   However, many interconnections, stories and even scientific and historical significances are attached to this festival that we must not overlook. For example, different people interpret Diwali as the victory of good over evil for several reasons. The popular legend talks ab...
